To help raise awareness for Crohn’s Disease, I am donated 150 copies of The Big Kick around Northeast Ohio and hosted a workshop to teach kids about the stigma of chronic illnesses. There aren’t enough books about kids with Crohn’s Disease or any other chronic illness, so with the help of a wonderful team I created my own!
Crohn’s Disease affects an estimated 40,000 children in the United Sates, with another 40,000 children with similar diseases. However, there are very few examples of books with chronically ill characters, especially for children.
Media representation is very important for everyone, especially children. Research has shown that children who see themselves reflected in the books, movies, and TV shows they watch have considerably higher self-esteem than those who don’t. These characters can also serve as role models or inspirational figures, especially to children with chronic illnesses.
Right now, the project has been completed! There are 150 copies of the book in hospitals, schools, libraries, and with kids who will appreciate it. Megan's Gold Award project was approved by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and the Girl Scouts of the USA, and she has received recognition from dozens of organizations and policymakers for her project. Check out the Gold Award Impact page!
Great Question! Now that 150 copies of the book are out in the world, the project is officially done. However, there are lots of great organizations like the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, and Piper's Key that could use your support. Check out the Gold Award Impact page for more information on those organizations.
Copies of the book are now on an individual order basis, and the price will therefore be higher. Use the Contact Me page if you'd like a physical copy, or otherwise check out the digital version on the Read the Book page!
The Girl Scout Gold Award is an independent service project for high school Girl Scouts. The project's goal is to help girls build leadership skills by solving a problem in their community.
